Slime, Smiles and Movie Magic

Skills and individual NDIS goals we can work towards

Fine motor skills: practising pouring, mixing and using tools.

Planning and sequencing: following steps and organising materials.

Communication: expressing preferences, sharing ideas and asking for assistance.

Self-awareness and regulation: recognising sensory preferences and communicating support needs.

Community participation: building familiarity with group outings and transitions.

Social connection: sharing an experience and talking about favourite moments.

A day of creativity and shared experiences awaits at Slime Lab, followed by a visit to the cinema to enjoy The Cat in the Hat.

Making slime offers opportunities to practise the hand skills used in everyday tasks. Measuring, pouring, mixing and manipulating materials involve hand-eye coordination, using both hands together and controlling movements. Following a sequence also gives children opportunities to practise planning, paying attention and problem-solving as they work towards their own creation.

Children can explore their preferences for different textures and communicate what feels comfortable for them. Participation can include observing, using tools or handling materials directly, depending on each child's preferences and the options available.

The cinema visit provides a community setting in which to practise moving between activities, waiting, communicating needs and enjoying an experience alongside others. Children may also practise recognising when they need help or a break.

The EISS Open - Building Skills on and off the Court

Skills and individual NDIS goals we can

work towards

Movement and coordination: practising balance, ball tracking and racquet control.

Motor planning: organising body movements to attempt a new skill.

Social participation: taking turns, encouraging others and working towards shared goals.

Emotional regulation: recognising frustration and

practising helpful coping strategies.

Communication and self-advocacy: requesting

assistance, clarification or a break.

Confidence: trying activities and recognising personal achievements.

The EISS Open brings children together for tennis activities, friendly challenges and opportunities to encourage one another. The emphasis is on participation, effort and connection, with opportunities to develop skills that extend beyond the court.

From an occupational therapy perspective, tennis involves coordinating the eyes, hands and body while responding to a changing environment. Holding a racquet, tracking a ball and positioning the body offer opportunities to practise balance, movement planning and hand-eye coordination.

Group activities also create opportunities to communicate with teammates, understand instructions and take turns. Children can practise responding when an activity feels challenging, asking for help and trying a different approach. Celebrating effort and recognising personal progress can help children build confidence in participating alongside others.

The day can connect with individual NDIS goals relating to recreation, peer relationships, physical participation and greater independence in community activities.
